InfoLink Consulting has published its report ranking the leading battery energy storage system (BESS) suppliers for 2024. BESS shipments continued to grow in 2024, reaching 240 GWh globally, an increase of more than 60% year-on-year.
BESS- page AC: Overview of the top 10 manufacturers in 2024 On the AC side of BESS, leading global manufacturers and integrators included Tesla, Sungrow, CRRC Zhuzhou Institute, Fluence, and HyperStrong. We rank the Top 10 largest AC manufacturers and integrators of BESS in the figure below:
Very fierce competition Tesla and Sungrow retained the top two spots among the world's Top10 suppliers. Tesla was the market leader by a wide margin in Q1 and Q2 2024, but Sungrow caught up in the second half of the year and surpassed Tesla in global shipment volume in Q3 and Q4.
In 2025, there will continue to be a fierce battle between Tesla and Sungrow for the top spot in BESS deliveries on the AC side.
Market balance Among the top ten BESS manufacturers, six companies were from China and four from the US, confirming that there is a balanced competitive environment in the industry. Chinese companies dominated their domestic market while gradually expanding overseas.
In contrast, US firms used the North American market as a stronghold and actively expanded into Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Asia-Pacific region. In 2025, the fierce competition between Chinese and US firms is likely to intensify significantly.
Strengthening of solar and wind giants BESS manufacturers with a strong position in solar and wind power strengthened strongly in the storage market last year. With the expansion in BESS, they created a second pillar of growth beyond the traditional wind and solar business, further strengthening their business model.
This strategy has shown promising results in 2024, with Envision and Goldwind Carbon Neutral (both with a strong position in the wind market) ranked 6th and 11th among the Top BESS manufacturers globally.
Canadian Solar and Trina Storage (both with very strong positions in solar panel manufacturing) also achieved significant success, ranking 9th and 13th in the world among the Top BESS Manufacturers.
Industry consolidation In early 2024, China Electrical Equipment Group merged with three subsidiaries, Xuji Electric Storage, Pinggao Group and SCETL, to form the new China Electrical Equipment Group Energy Storage.
With this merger, China Electrical Equipment Group Energy Storage has become one of the world's leading BESS suppliers. Among its subsidiaries, SCETL and Xuji Electric Storage ranked 10th and 12th in the world respectively, and their combined supply competed with the world's leading companies.
BESS- DC side: Overview of top manufacturers in 2024
BESS (DC side) market leaders maintain stable positions as battery cell manufacturers support their expansion. In 2024, the top two market players CATL and BYD have strengthened their position with a significant lead. They were followed by PotisEdge, Hithium and RelyEZ (see figure above).
Interestingly, CATL, BYD and market newcomer Hithium are the top battery cell manufacturers that are increasingly expanding in the BESS system integration segment. With their technological advantages and strong position in the supply chain, the top cell manufacturers are strengthening their competitiveness across the industry chain through vertical integration.
CATL and BYD now cover all aspects of the industrial chain, from lithium mining to cell manufacturing and system integration. They are expected to make significant progress in the BESS sector by 2025 (AC side).
By 2024, the energy storage market has changed significantly. Leading companies increased their market share due to cost control and strong distribution, while smaller players faced price competition and limited funding, leading to industry consolidation. Meanwhile, global demand for energy storage has spread across regions, prompting companies to expand in R&D, manufacturing, supply and operations.
Despite short-term geopolitical challenges, the transition to modern energy will be a major driver for the development of the energy storage industry in 2025. Analysts at InfoLink Consulting expect the global market to grow by up to 25% in the year, with total supply exceeding 300 GWh.
